Today was such a thrill! It’s been a week and a half. Loco and I have been working very hard in the round pen every day. They say thoroughbreds naturally tend to move forward in the pen. Not mine. We’re getting much better, but he’d really like to just look at me and follow me around.
So I went to bed last night, planning the next creative round pen lesson in my head. Well, I woke up with a completely different idea. Today, I will ride! I hoped Loco had the same premonition.
Loco is a great communicator: “I am so happy to see you” or “I’m done for the day” or “You’re kinda bugging me”. While I groomed him and tacked up, he was a little nippy, so I wasn’t sure this would be the best day for riding. I decided to take baby steps. While my friend held the lead, I stood on the mounting block. He moved around and purposely swatted me with his tail. Hmmm. Was he saying, “Just get on with it” or “Back off”? I could keep doing this for 30 minutes, or just get on.
So I did it! It was the best decision I could have possibly made. After a couple laps, we took off the lead line. We walked a bit. We trotted. Loco was a very good boy.
I am so proud of both of us. Sometimes I think you just have to go for it. I had to ride! Here’s to a beautiful day. Cheers!
