What’s in an OTTB’s Name? Often a Great Deal of Meaning!

Apr 27, 2009

Manager Boire was named in part after an employee at the barn where he was bred. If you choose to rename your horse, please continue to use their registered names when you attend shows.

Soft Gestures have Maximum Impact

Apr 30, 2008

Well I just had to email you and let you know Max is not going to able to be ridden for a while. I was riding one of my other horses on Monday and was thrown and injured. I am going to continue to work with him on the ground until I am cleared by…

Another Happy, Healthy OTTB: Knight Villian

Jan 9, 2009

Knight Villian is doing really well. He’s fat and happy, though his mane would probably make you laugh. It hangs down past the underside of his neck, by about two inches, and tail touches the ground. He has a harem of two geriatric mares, a paint quarter horse and a bay thoroughbred, and he is…

Hunter, Jumper? OTTB Does Dressage!

Jun 29, 2009

Classical dressage is the basis for all riding disciplines. It is all about learning to communicate with your horse so that there is a harmony and balance. I like to call it, “Meditation in Motion”. Jumping should be just dressage over fences rather than the yanking and pulling that you see from so many jumper riders.

OTTBs Aren’t Afraid of Scary Costumes or Politicians

Nov 1, 2008

The Success Stories are a lot of fun to read. I thought I might add a posting for the horses still at Bits & Bytes Farm. We have lots of Success Stories and this site is a good place to add some of their stories to those of horses that have already found new moms.…

Big Heart – Big Talent

Jan 25, 2010

Ping (Shelby’s Hill) is now 7, and a full 16 hands. He has filled out and is beautiful.

After some work his feet are now great, and I hope to start his event training this year. He is so talented in dressage he could just do that, but that is not all I want to do. I long-lined him yesterday after not doing it for two years and he was just great. I still toy with the idea of a bigger horse but he has a big heart.

“Sage” is (at) Home on the Range

Jun 16, 2009

Home…Home on the range (in Texas)…..Sage is now finally here with me and he has a new best friend Tiger. Both of them are 4 year-old OTTBs and they are both beautiful fiery red chestnuts. You would think they are long lost brothers, because they are inseparable. They don’t leave each others side….even though they are turned out with three other horses. If you take one of them away from the other they whinny at each other it’s hilarious.
